In our last article, we discussed some of the Indianapolis Auto Insurance discounts you didn’t know you were eligible for. One of those deductions comes from safe driving practices which reduce your risk of accidents, injuries and even death. Every driver is guilty of at least a few of bad habits. But, before it’s too late, we’re going to shed some light on the best ways to ensure your safety on the road, as well as everyone else around you.
This is one of the most common things any driver hears when it comes to safe driving: defensive driving. The National Safety Council defines defensive driving as “driving to save lives, time and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.”
This includes constantly scanning the entire area around you to identify potential dangers, making sure other drivers see you, and leaving plenty of space around your vehicle for more time to react in emergency situations, says Fix Auto. This also means scanning the road for potential obstructions or changes in traffic, being alert and anticipating other drivers’ hazardous moves.
Stay under the speed limit.
This goes without saying, and it’s easy to get comfortable on your daily commute and speed through it. However, speed limits are in place for a reason and are meant to keep the roads safe and clear of accidents. What’s more, drivers should slow down regardless of the speed limit posted when they are near construction zones, traveling on a narrow road, or there is inclement weather such as ice, snow, sleet or rain.
Today’s digital age makes it difficult to focus your attention solely on driving. However, texting and driving is more dangerous than driving under the influence, so make a proactive choice to put your cell phone down when you’re behind the wheel. This also means using hands free Bluetooth devices for phone calls and waiting to snack or apply makeup until you’re parked.
Maintain your vehicle.
Bald tires, worn brakes and broken headlights can be a deadly combination. Maintaining your vehicle might take money out of your pocket, but you’ll be grateful you spent the money when you get to and from your destinations without issue.
Use your signals.
Turn signals allow everyone near you on the road to anticipate your next move and respond accordingly. If you’re caught not using your turn signal, you could anger another driver or even earn yourself a ticket; it is the law, after all.
